I don't believe there is any evidence that...Hi. I don't believe there is any evidence that these 'Petrol Barges' formed any part of the Whale & Beetle roadways of the Mulberry harbours. What I have seen is evidence that they were tested at Garlieston (along with all other Mulberry prototypes) as there is a photograph of three FCB looking barges supporting Whale bridges leading to the Spud pier head at Garlieston in 1943.

I believe that in the same way as the Spud pierced was preferred over Hippos, Beetles were deemed optimal as the pontoons for the Whale bridges as they were specifically designed for the interlocking of the bridge spans...

Did they go to Normandy as 'Petrol Barges' - for me, the jury is still out on that one in general but as regards the 16 at Rainham Marshes, it is highly unlikely that they ever left the Thames ! I found an aerial photo this week of 60 of them mothballed off the Thames in 1951...by 1956, they had vanished. For my money, they were seen as emergency breakwaters and indeed had been deployed for same purpose in the Ouse and Trent floods of 1947 (they were open barges built Hull, but same idea). They are found at various sites in Essex acting as coastal erosion defences.

Logically, what would 16 Petrol Barges be doing handing around in Normandy in 1953, just ready to be towed all the way over the Channel to help create a bit of a flood barrier ? How long would such an operation take and given it was peacetime, such an operation would surely attract some press attention ?

So far in my research, as regards the Petrol Barges acquired and repurposed as houseboats, the tanks were unused - still had concrete dust on the inner walls. Also there was an exercise in 1943 called 'Exercise Jantzen' that took place in South Wales...an operations test run. The Petrol Barges deployed them spewed petrol from cracks and fissures and reputedly, one broke its back. I await papers relating to the use of PB200s in Operation Overlord but for me at least, their deployment for carrying fuel would have been seen as a monumental risk . . .

Just my opinion. How's that for a rambling ??

TrickyRickyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16598891436763112922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2896552808274455196.post-64984751528045515432022-03-04T00:47:17.909+00:002022-03-04T00:47:17.909+00:00Poker Games at Mohegan Sun: Live Casino, Poker Roo...Poker Games at Mohegan Sun: Live Casino, Poker Room, Gambling
Enjoy over 450 online slots and games 창원 출장마사지 like blackjack, poker, roulette and video 남원 출장안마 poker. https://vignette3.wikia.noco...As you can see here-

https://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/vectorthrust/images/e/ee/A_FX-12.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20150129120325

The A/X was an attempt to harvest the flying wing configuration before the A/FX became the Lockheed NATF (cubist Tomcat) reborn.

My understanding was that they chopped about 90% of the overreach out of the A-12, in light of ODS experience. One radar, one FLIR, no IRST, Much smaller cockpit/canopy (effects signatures in a big way) and most importantly, got rid of the massive internal weapons bay requirements for 16 Mk.82 and outboard AAM bays to generally go with an F-117X approach of 2-4 weapons and two bays.

This was also the timeframe (91-92) that the JDAM program was starting to produce useable alternatives to Paveway, though they all went to the bombers at first, and so we had a real chance to turn the airframe around into a high altitude penetrator with through weather targeting and standoff instead of the USN standard of lolo all the way. Changing a flight profile like that can do wonders to cruise settings and SFC among other things, letting you go with less fuel and higher transit heights.

The last I saw of the airframe design, they had made it into a mini B-2 with planform aligned sawtooth trailing edges and a nose that looked somewhat like the X-32, sans the Monica inlet.

It was a much cleaner design and would have worked as an attack platform, as well or better than the F-35C, not least because it didn't pretend to be a fighter (72 second sprint time from Mach .8 to 1.2 /=/ 'multirole' A2A potential on the JSF!) and used PW7000 cores which were essentially F414 equivalents without the burner.

This gave it a 16,000lbf baseline thrust as opposed to the 12,000lbf F404s on the A-12 which also went a LONG way to correct SEROC and yaw issues as the exhausts were also moved well back and had condi petals like those on the F-22 which gives a lot of steer-into-dead-engine responsiveness, not found on other jets.

Again, had James Smith McDonnell run the ATA program, I can assure you that there would have been three separate funding lines, just as there were for the B-2 (which had an aluminum alternative if the Composite Wing failed). One would have been dedicated to naval flying qualities. Another would have been signatures dedicated and the third would have been entirely oriented around getting structures correct. The issue with the 'shrinking frames' and the bolthead flanges microcracking the spars would have never happened.

The other thing to keep in mind here is that McDonnell had access to Northrop's RCS database on their YF-23 joint effort. Now of course, this was a compartmentalized SAR program in it's own right (no shared engineers) but the Presidents all talked to each other or at least they did in the 70s, a couple times a month, took vacations together and the kids all knew each etc.

And so if Mac called up Jones and said: "Tom, I'm in trouble, the squids are not able to twist the blue suiter's arm high enough on this signatures stuff and I'm eating my budget with unplanned RCS testing, trying to get stealth under control on an already overweight airframe."

Tom Jones (via his own horse laugh on the ATA fixed cost bid) would known instantly what to do and have gone to the LOCLOEXCOM (DSARC or JRMB at the time) and they would have done a deal to kick down a compartment wall because everyone knew that the Russians didn't have banker problems and Jones would not have wanted McDonnell in financial trouble on a program that didn't bleed them any, two years away from ATF demonstrator buildup.

It's stuff like this that makes me think there is a LOT more to the A-12 story than is commonly admitted. JS was dead by 1980. But his son John had a pretty good head on his shoulders. Someone would have caught this and used executive privilege to jump a fence and build some alliances.M&Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02130288027997536528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2896552808274455196.post-62230133928504261292017-09-16T02:14:36.894+01:002017-09-16T02:14:36.894+01:00The tragedy of the A-12 court case appears, to me,...The tragedy of the A-12 court case appears, to me, to be one of the Contractors winning until the government shopped the verdict high enough up the political judgeship food chain to win by default.

That this DESTROYED the top two fighter houses in the country is obvious and likely suggests that the fix was in (sell your aerospace, they will never work again in the U.S. defense field). This is always a bad idea because it collapses diversity of design stable approaches and particularly, in this case, the ability to do large scale programs, well. GD had it, with the F-16. McDonnell had it, with the F-4/15/18 and AV-8B. You NEVER cut the hamstrings on your primary defense houses like this.

Lockheed got GD's aerospace and their curse of boutique technocentrism from their special mission platform speciality immediately moved from Palmdale to Ft. Worth (see: F-104 for how predictable the F-35 screwup was).

Boeing got McDonnell and the F/A-18 and F-15 programs have subsequently been run into the ground (dead horse, developed beyond potential) because Boeing is a commercial giant and treats the former McD as a side interest, not funding them like they should.

This is what happens when Big Fed decides they are going to where the Daddy pants, no matter what. Corporations get spanked, right or wrong, and the defense of the nation suffers because companies are like bodies. There may be occasionally something wrong with the head, but 90% of the skill is 'muscle memory', whether at the CATIA station or on the line.

Mind you, I have since heard an awful lot of negatives about what was going on in that new plant. A real 'Hookers and High Fives' condition prevailed with management running open ended expense accounts and a lot of 'myth before the metal' salesmanship rather than hard work as met milestones. You read a little bit of this in the 'museum' and 'Congressional Visit' pieces in the Stevenson book.

One thing is certain, James 'Mac' McDonnell never would have put up with a single point of contact as a /Navy Captain/ PEO and would have gone straight to the Admiral at NavAir or to Weinberger if the money and the engineers sandbox requirements list started diverging without the Navy coming through on the VLO. Nothing was ever allowed to go pear shaped on his watch.

He was something of a Big Book Of Aerodynamics kluge artist (see: The F-4) but he would measure to the millimeter and never promise something he couldn't deliver. Totally Hands On management who told his people what was needed and what was at stake and always had an open door for anyone who felt it couldn't be done to spec, schedule and budget.

He and Tom Jones had a lot in common in this, if James had still been at the stick, I don't think MDD would have ever committed, blind, like they did.

With regard to the Stealth Bra, you are correct, though I believe it had as much to do with refining the aerodynamics and particularly the onspeed AOA handling in the carrier pattern and drag coefficients for radius as it did signatures. Again, Ben Rich was no fool. And if he said that the A-12 was an 11 when it came out of his RCS group, he wasn't lying.
M&Shttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02130288027997536528noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2896552808274455196.post-25474160488765616322017-04-05T03:11:19.485+01:002017-04-05T03:11:19.485+01:00Hi David, would love to find out if you are availa...Hi David, would love to find out if you are available for a news storyAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03920474519677852627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2896552808274455196.post-3475264639915762852017-03-04T15:55:14.103+00:002017-03-04T15:55:14.103+00:00well, i wrote before to say this was my fave websi...well, i wrote before to say this was my fave website and had assumed it was all over now you are no longer posting new walks. but now i found your blog. what a terrible experience for you all. geçmiş olsun as we say in turkey.
may you soon be walking far and energetically again.
greetings from caroline at hikingistanbulkarofhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02720871828795226950noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2896552808274455196.post-37476637746386024562016-06-02T06:33:03.125+01:002016-06-02T06:33:03.125+01:00Hello Everybody,

I sometimes think I am too uncritical in my reading. However I really liked the first part, and enjoyed the gradual exposure of the characters. And I didn't hanker after justice at the end, because I don't think you need the same closure in a psychological thriller as you do in a straight forward crime novel. Although I must confess I would have liked Amy to get her comeuppance :) I thought some concepts were well explored. The pressure on women to be Cool Girls is one I can relate to. And some couples do have unhealthy love-hate relationships. Anyway, interesting to read your comments.
I hated the title. Forgot to mention that. I think that thought alone resulted in numbers changing sides to blue to keep the SNP out of a coalition.
But my own brief thoughts were. Have I seen enough of labour to convince me that they can improve on the mess the country was in 5 years ago. Answer no. Is it worth giving the Tories another term. Answer yes.
I would like to see the NHS taken out of the political ring and manage it as a stand alone business rather than a political pawn.
