The BBC have never played an impartial role in the discussion on AGW and Richard Black is one of the chief culprits.

The truth *is* out there. But is certainly not as black & white as our IPCC are trying to make out.

I am sick & tired of being accused of being a "denier" (with all the nasty connotations associated with the holocaust deliberately implied) when in fact I just want an open intelligent debate without "sides" being taken.

Follow the money: Thatcher set up the IPCC when Britain was labelled "the Dirty Man of Europe" to gain the chair and the moral high ground. The vast sums of money spent on scientific research is defended to the death by these scientists, as to question what they say might reduce their funding.

As you rightly say, the tiny amount of funding of the Heartland Institute is a flea on the camel's back compared to all the money spent by pro AGW science.

Hi Alan,

The government's policy is for AM and FM to be switched off, in a similar manner to analogue TV. This was scheduled to be in 2015, but take-up of DAB has not been good enough to allow that.

There is still debate about when it will happen:

Although certainly a digital radio fan I do not think the technology is ready for a switch. Portable radios in particular suffer from poor battery life (and sadly always will when compared to FM - with FM simple circuitry can decode the signal; with DAB you need full demultiplexing and decompressing).

However the government want to see the AM and FM frequencies.

One of the lovely things about analogue is being able to go walking and only change the batteries once a week, not once every six hours...

Oh yes, the lag is a noticeable problem. Basically the digital signal has to be encoded, transmitted, a certain number of frames received, then decoded. This entire process can take a few seconds.

Whereas an analogue signal generally just has the transmission time to cope with. (*)

Having said that, I think the advantages of digital radio are worth the time lag. Then again, I would say that :-)

(*) It is, sometimes, more complex than that. Most things sadly are.

FM has the added advantage of being good for broadcasting time-signals, something that digital does dismally - we have three digital sets here and they each have a significant and different lag (up to 8 seconds) when uttering the BBC's "pips". Ever tried listening to three digital sets playing the same thing? It's audio-carnage!

All my boots, so far, have lasted 12-18 months each and I calculated some years ago that I get approx 1000-1500 miles out of them. I have had many different brands but only one pair has split on the uppers, and this was not a full split, but a cracking of the leather. All my boots have worn out due to the soles wearing thin. I regret having to bin them because the uppers are always good. My current boots are Karrimor which I purchased from Amazon. These will keep me going for another year!

Some excellent walks. SWCP brings back some good memories and the Angles Way I find very useful as I hope to walk from Beccles to Knetishall Heath next spring. The Oulton Broad to Yarmouth section is interesting but watch out for the legendary ghosts of Gariannonum!
