Why? What sort of mindless idiots vandalise a lifeboat, for Christ's sake?
I hope that the miscreant(s) get a suitable punishment, ideally something with a heavy social aspect.

I agree. Sometimes I wish we had a ability to somewhat thin out the genepool when I read storys like this.
Putting them out to sea in a slowly sinking inflatable would be my ideal.
